Guitar-driven songs influenced by 60’s & 70’s Pop- yet very original. MICHAEL OWENS is a Singer/songwriter, Guitar player and Record Producer. He is also founded BLACKBERRY WAY RECORDING STUDIOS, the infamous Minneapolis Recording Studio and Record Label. BLACKBERRY WAY was formed in 1974 with an eye toward recording emerging Minneapolis rock bands. The studio evolved into a 24 track facility, dedicated to music and hosting over two dozen recording groups a year. If the walls could talk, they would tell stories of the SUBURBS recording IN COMBO as well as most of their Twin/Tone recordings, the first HUSKER DU record, SOUL ASYLUM and of course THE REPLACEMENTS. Most of THE REPLACEMENTS early work was recorded at BLACKBERRY WAY including the critically acclaimed LP LET IT BE. In the Nov 16th 1989 issue THE 100 Greatest Albums of the 80’s, ROLLING STONE named LET IT BE the 15th most important album of the decade. Peter Gabriel was 14th and Prince was 16th. The album featured Peter Buck of REM playing on the single, I WILL DARE. The pre-production of PLEASED TO MEET ME was done at BLACKBERRY WAY for SIRE/WARNER BROTHERS as well as the promotional interview with PAUL WESTERBERG for radio stations across the nation. THE REPLACEMENTS have been nominated in 2013 to THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME! MIX MAGAZINE calls BLACKBERRY WAY “a haven for pop rock bands.” The truth is we recorded all styles of music. Heavy metal band HURRICANE ALICE recorded an album that led to a signing at ATLANTIC RECORDS. Country band LIVE’N KICKING also recorded an album that led to a deal with WARNER BROTHERS and a GRAMMY NOMINATION. TETE NOIRE did a recording that led to a signing with ROUNDER RECORDS. Producer ROB STEVENS (Lennon, Red hot Chili Peppers and Herbie Hancock) produced a major label demo for FUN HOUSE and was very impressed with the sound at BLACKBERRY WAY. BOBBY Z, late of PRINCE’S REVOLUTION, produced tracks for TRIP SHAKESPEARE that led to a signing with A&M RECORDS. British producer CLIFF DAVIES (Ted Nugent) produced an album for local great BARRY GOLDBERG, a fun week indeed! Also included on the client list: THE TRASHMEN, THE CASTAWAYS, THE SUICIDE COMMANDOS, A&M RECORDS, JIMI DESTRI of BLONDIE and GRAMMY AWARD winner JOHN MADOCK….and many more. In the early 1980’s BLACKBERRY WAY RECORDS was formed. Owners/producers Mike Owens & Kevin Glynn produced several critically acclaimed albums for the label. SWING SET was called “Pop Stalwarts’ by BILLBOARD, “Pop Album of the Year” by MPLS/ST.PAUL MAGAZINE and “Worth two or three million spins around the block” by ALBUM NETWORK. MUSICIAN MAGAZINE called the TOM BRIGHT LP “A top ten record.” THE OH’S (Flamin’ Oh’s) PAINT THE SKY was a BILLBOARD recommended record. IDIOT SAVANT and Mike & Kevin’s band THE IDLE STRAND garnered college radio airplay across the Nation and rave reviews from ROCKPOOL,BOSTON ROCK MAGAZINE, CMJ & US ROCK to name a few. BLACKBERRY WAY RECORDS carries on today, with new releases as well as planned reissues of some of the most historically important music from the MPLS/STPAUL area.

Michael Owens was a founding member of Minneapolis based Twin/Tone recording artists FINGERPRINTS. In addition to dates with Pere Ubu, Blondie and Peter Hammill, the band headlined at the legendary Longhorn Bar, First Ave and other venues in the five state area including dates at Duffy’s with Mitch Ryder and Dwight Twilley. The late Tim Carr called Mike’s song Wasted On You, the best single song on the first three Twin/Tone EP’s. (The little Red Records-Fingerprints, The Suburbs and Curtiss A’s Spooks) The band also headlined at The Walker Art Center Presents “The Cream Of The Crop” supported by Spooks (Curtiss A) and NNB. FINGERPRINTS, was also chosen as the first band paired with a movie in The Walker Art Centers Band and a movie in Loring Park as well as the M-80 Music Festival. The band reformed for The Mill City Music Festival in 1999. Mike along with BLACKBERRY WAY partner and Fingerprints drummer Kevin Glynn, formed THE IDLE STRAND. With Gary Menne on bass the band released two LP’s on BLACKBERRY WAY RECORDS. The LP’s received rave reviews in Boston Rock, Rockpool and Cash Box magazines. The LP’s were released in Europe on LINE/WARNER BROTHERS RECORDS, and garnered tons of college radio- airplay in the USA. As a record producer/recording engineer and session musician Mike appears on countless projects over the years. The new CD, THE DEVIL”S DOORWAY was recorded at BLACKBERRY WAY winter 2013. Liner Notes by Peter Jesperson: I spent a lot of time with THE DEVIL’S DOORWAY. I have to say it’s mighty impressive. You’ve clearly put a lot of thought into it. I love hearing how your eclectic taste gets filtered into your own stuff. Not surprisingly the thing that instantly caught my ear is the guitar playing. I also love the way yours and Terri’s voices work so well together. The somewhat extended intro of “THE DEVIL’S DOORWAY” really lays down the law that this is a record that isn’t in a hurry. I love the “Trust me!” right before the solo! The second track, “YOU WON”T BE SATISFIED”, brings the tempo up a bit, is a little brighter in mood and is whimsical lyrically. The drum tracks are especially nice on this one and the layered vocals are super-cool. “HERE COMES A MADMAN” sounds like the big one. There’s something really special about this song. On “BUCKETFUL OF RAIN”, the guitar kills me-both the tone and the playing. “HILLBILLY GIRL”, a nice country- folk number leads into “I HOPE YOU’RE HAPPY”, nothing like a 12 string pop song! It’s cool to hear Terri’s voice out front on “OH DADDY” featuring a nice piano. I love the line “Father, Son & Holy Ghost/Who The Hell Can Help Me Most” on “COLD WIND BLOWING”- nice writing! Dig the strings on “BLUE WATER MEN” and I especially like the vocals on the title line on “BYE BYE BABY”. I love the cool, low note guitar solo on “QUEEN OF THE SOUTH” and “SPLENDORS OF THE PAST” is the right way to end the album. Sort of Pink Floyd, Atom Heart Mother or Meddle era. There you have it!
